Bend In The River Gallery

Bend In The River shows and sells contemporary
art. We enjoy the work of artists who plough
their own, isolated, furrows.

How and where we exhibit is an evolving situation.
Future programs will certainly include more use
of x-church (
http://www.slumgothic.co.uk/), and we are
currently researching a number of city options
including appearing at more art fairs after a
very successful London Art Fair 2008.

Medical Loan

Many people in the Gainsborough area are still unaware of the services offered by the Red Cross; they can lend items of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, bed rests and commodes, to people on a short term basis.

The Disabled Living Centre is the central source of equipment, information and advice for disabled persons, their cares and professionals. The service aims to help the disabled person to become more independent. In addition to the comprehensive range of specialised items and mobility equpiment designed for the less abled bodied, the centre also welcomes visits for people to try out any of the equipment on display.

Childrens Links - Mobile Playscheme

Mobile Play activities for children and young people in  West Lindsey

The district council has been successful in accessing £200,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to develop and improve the play opportunities over the next three years for children and young people in West Lindsey.

Two Play rangers will be appointed to develop a mobile play service that will bring exciting play activities right into the heart of village greens and community venues including Gainsborough . This service will be free and available to local children and their families and be available after school and during the holidays

The play ranger scheme will provide a wide range of activities to suit all ages such as being able to design and make things, trying circus skills, den building, playing games  and a number of activity days with mobile skate parks and climbing walls.

The scheme will be delivered by West Lindsey district council, Childrens Links and Gainsborough Adventure Playground Association.

Childrens Links would welcome enquires from individual parishes or clusters of parishes as well as town councils who would be interested in working with us to provide this mobile play ranger service.

Contact Clare Bryan Play Development Officer Childrens Links on 01507 528300 for further details.

Community Crafts

 Supported by :

The Community Crafts group was set up in association with West Lindsey Disability Network in February 2007 and is organised and run by disabled people. The group is designed to bring together a wide range of people from the Gainsborough area, and aims to include both disabled and non-disabled members.

Anybody with an interest in arts or crafts is invited to get involved, whatever their skills or abilities. The project encourages people to share their ideas and existing skills, and give them the opportunity to try out new ones. However, no previous experience is necessary - simply come along and have a go!

The group is funded from voluntary sources and donations. The group is led entirely by volunteers and relies on everyone involved to be self-motivated. New participants and volunteers are always very welcome.

Sessions are held twice monthly on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 1pm to 3pm, at the Swaby Unit, John Coupland Hospital, Gainsborough.

Further information can be obtained by contacting Kathleen on 01427 679956 or Marj on 01427 839541.

Friends of the Old Hall Association

F.O.H.A.

About the Friends of the Old Hall Association

Gainsborough Old Hall is a unique medieval manor house right in the centre of Gainsborough. Sir Thomas Burgh built it between 1460 and 1480 and it remains much as he left it, to the delight of thousands of visitors each year. The Friends were formed in 1949 to save the building from decay, and to open it to the public.

Although the Old Hall is now owned by English Heritage and managed by Lincolnshire County Council, the Friends still have an active role to play. Friends are involved in all aspects of the Old Hall from guiding parties and catering, to behind the scenes work. There is also an active programme of social events for Friends. All this is co-ordinated by a Friends' committee which works with the Curator. Whatever you would like to offer will be welcome, and there really is something for everyone. The staff and the Friends look forward to hearing from you soon! We welcome you whether you would like to give active help or simply moral support.

Gainsborough and District Heritage Association

The Gainsborough and District Heritage Association started in 1994.

For over 60 years there had been calls for a local history museum to be started in Gainsborough. The idea of a museum first appeared in a letter to the local Gainsborough newspaper in 1930.

The Association was the result of those calls. Thanks to the determination of local people who wanted other to appreciate the local history of Gainsborough and the surrounding area.

This led to the opening of the Heritage Centre in the Britannia Chambers on Beaumont Street, part of former Marshalls buildings in Gainsborough.

The local Gainsborough paper summed up everyone's feelings with a headline in their Friday, 7th October 1994 edition:

"It's finally here after 64 years"

On the 15th and 16th of October 1994 the GDHA opened the Heritage Centre with Marshall Vintage Tractors - a pictorial exhibition of the Floods - a special 1995 calendar available for sale - a model of a Midget Submarine to see - a Rose Packaging Machine and Steam Engines.

The Centre was opened by Sir Nicholas Bacon, patron of the Association.

The local Gainsborough paper said only two words could sum up the event ‘tremendous success.'

Although the Heritage Centre and Museum in Britannia Chambers, Marshall, Beaumont Street, Gainsborough, closed in 2004 due to development of Marshalls Yard - we are still very active with a membership of over 60.

We now operate from No 12, Gainsborough Waterfront Enterprise Centre (formerly Lea Road School), lea Road, Gainsborough, where our archives are worked on and stored.

If you're interested in joining the Gainsborough and District Heritage Association, the Membership Secretary is James Titley, who will be
happy to accept membership enquiries at gdha-membership@hotmail.com

Membership subscriptions for 2007 are; £5 Standard, and £2.50 Senior.

Membership costs £5 for one year.

Gainsborough Furniture & Resource Centre have been providing essential items of furniture to people in our community who have no other means of obtaining it.  We collect items of essential furniture in good clean condition from the general public free of charge and within a 12 miles radius.  The people who donate their furniture are happy to support our project, rather than see it going to Landfill sites.

All our clients are referred to us through a registered agency such as Home Start, NACRO, Pass it On Shop, Social Services, ACIS, Citizens Advice Bureau, Women's Refuge, Shaw Trust, Probation Services, The Lodge etc.  We are open to more agencies who wish to register with us and use our service.

Last year we collected over 357 items of furniture and helped over 97 households.  Many of our clients had been given accommodation but had absolutely nothing to furnish it with.

GFRC is supported by Volunteers and without which, this project would not be able to operate and provide this valuable service.

Are you able to help a local community group help local residents?

Gainsborough Furniture and Resource Centre (GFRC) is a neighbourhood community group where local residents donate their clean, quality furniture from homes within a 12 mile radius of Gainsborough. This provides much needed furniture for people on lower incomes in the local area, who would be unable to obtain new furniture when moving or setting up home. Such people are referred through registered agencies and can choose from a selection of good quality furniture in return for a small contribution.

The scheme is situated on Heapham Road industrial estate and is currently assisted by several unpaid volunteers in various roles.

Due to an increased demand for the service, Gainsborough Furniture and Resource Centre now invite dedicated local people to become volunteers in a variety of ways, providing their time for perhaps one or two mornings a week.

The scheme has also recently been awarded a grant from the PIP Fund from Lincolnshire County Council Healthy Communities sector, which will enable the service to purchase uniforms and safety items for volunteers.

An additional van driver/helper is currently required to help with increased demand. (A clean driving licence is required).  Helpers are also needed to assist with collecting and moving donated furniture from the homes of local residents.  Volunteers for both of these roles must be generally fit as these are often physically demanding roles.

The centre also requires some assistance with its administration work.  This is a busy role and as such it would be beneficial if the volunteer had customer service experience, a good knowledge of databases/Access and Excel programmes and could work unsupervised.   This person may work closely with other volunteers and also local people choosing furniture items.

Support is also required to set up a professional website for the centre. Someone working in a local IT company or attending a website design course may wish to give a little of their time to initially set up such a website to help the centre.

The scheme would also like to hear from local people who have some experience of carpentry, furniture restoration or of cleaning upholstery, who could spare a few hours a week. This could allow the centre to receive additional donations of furniture previously not accepted, and then pass these to others in an improved condition.

Should you be interested in volunteering for any of these positions, please contact the Project Manager, Sheilagh Walters on 01427 616111 between the hours of 9am to 1pm to discuss this further. An answer machine is available out of hours or during busy times. The centre can also be contacted by email on gfrcfurniture@hotmail.co.uk.

All volunteers will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Gainsborough Lions Club

We are a new club in Gainsborough, having only chartered in June last
year.

We are one small cog in the worldwide wheel of Lions Clubs International (the largest service organisation in the world).

We hold fundraising events with the aim of helping local organisations and charities, occasionally we subscribe to a National Lions Initiative
and International initiatives such as disaster funds - every penny of which goes to the local Lions Club where the assistance is needed, not
to governmental kitties..

All monies we raise for charity goes to charity, we meet admin expenses ourselves throughsubscriptions and internal raffles etc.

We are looking for new members all the time, as "many hands make light
work".

Our most noticeable charity fundraiser is the River Trent Duck Race which takes place on the Riverside Festival weekend.

We have supported various local organisations since our inception,

GAPA have a new vegetable patch, an ongoing job.

L.I.V.E.S. asked for a
donation to help in the purchase a resuscitation model and we were able
to provide the funds to buy one outright for them.

ACE inclusive sports club asked for financial help to purchase an item of sports
equipment for their club and I am pleased to say that we purchased
every item on their list.

There are many more people we have helped with various requests.

So we do what we can to help our local community.

We meet every second and fourth Monday of the month in the function
room at the Gainsborough Conservative Club, Heaton Street, at 8pm.

We would welcome anyone along to meet us, or contact us via our phone
- 07505 623995 - or people could check out our web site, www.

and contact us via the web site.

Photograph of a view of Gainsborough Old Hall

Visit Gainsborough Old Hall and step back into the past. This magnificent medieval manor is one of the best in the country and an evocative reminder of days gone by.

Tread in the footsteps of some of its illustrious royal visitors, both Richard III and Henry VIII where guests of the Burgh family, who originally built and lived in the building.  The Mayflower Pilgrims and John Wesley worshipped within its walls.

The Great Hall with its splendid, arched, wooden roof remains at the centre of the building to continue to inspire visitors.  The kitchens remain virtually unchanged since they were built and those who climb to the top of the brick built tower can enjoy the magnificent vista of both the manor lands and the river Trent into Nottingham.

Opening Times

All year round Monday to Saturday 10 am to 5pm.
From Easter to end of October we are also open on Sunday afternoons from 1pm until 4.30pm

Gainsborough Riverside Festival

This year there will be a decidedly 'Eastern' feel to Gainsborough.  In celebration of the Beijing Olympics the theme of the 2008 Riverside Festival is 'Gainsborough Goes Oriental' - when local residents and visitors alike will be able to experience a whole host of Chinese traditions.

The Festival which takes place on Saturday 7th (12.00 noon until 11.00pm) and Sunday 8th June 2008 (11.00am until 4.00pm) will take place at various locations throughout the town including along the Riverside and Whitton Gardens, at Gainsborough Old Hall, Parish Church and Marshalls Yard - bringing a truly party feel to the whole area which includes a fantastic firework show on the bank of the Trent on the Saturday night.

For those who aren't lucky enough to head off to Beijing this year, Gainsborough will be staging its own 'Mini Olympics' on the Sunday which will include lots of healthy activities for all the family, where visitors can try their hand at various sports such as Hockey, New Age Curling and Tai Chi.  There will also be a gladiator joust and a bungee jump.

For more traditional Chinese sports, check out the Mandarin Duck Race or the Dragon Boat Race.  And don't miss out on the infamous parade - which this year will be headed by a giant Chinese dragon.  There will also be a large fun fair and lots of stalls including a new arts and crafts area.  Visitors can also participate in various artistic activities, or why not try calligraphy in a pagoda, or ribbon dancing in the park?
